The Respondus Monitor second camera feature is an automated proctoring tool that requires students to use a separate mobile device (like a smartphone or tablet) alongside their computer's primary webcam. It provides instructors with a secondary side-angle view of the student's workspace, screen, and hands to deter unapproved resource use during high-stakes online exams.

How It Works for Students

  • Preparation: Ensure you have a charged secondary iOS or Android mobile device. You can test device compatibility beforehand using the Respondus Device Check.
  • Connection: After passing the initial computer webcam check inside LockDown Browser, a QR code will display on your screen.
  • Scanning: Scan the QR code with your mobile device's camera, allow permissions for video and audio, and place the device in landscape mode.
  • Placement: Position the phone or tablet to the side and slightly behind you to capture your profile, hands, keyboard, and screen. Tap "I'm ready" once stable.
  • Completion: Keep both devices active and plugged in. Do not close the mobile webpage until your exam is submitted and the "session complete" message appears on both screens.

How It Works for Instructors

  • Enabling: Go to your LMS course, open the LockDown Browser Dashboard, find the target exam settings, and select the Second Camera option under Respondus Monitor.
  • Customization: Edit and clarify positioning instructions for students if standard angles need modification.
  • Review: Access up to three synchronized video feeds (frontal webcam, second side camera, and screen recording) during post-exam analytics.
