iClicker Support

General information about i>Clickers

i>clickers are handheld devices used in an Audience Response System (ARS). They are small transmitters about the size of a television remote control. Students use i>clickers to transmit their answers to posted questions by pressing the clicker buttons.

ARS questions are normally written prior to class as part of preparing lecture notes or lesson plans. Inserting questions is typically no more difficult than creating a new slide in PowerPoint. Questions can also be created “on-the-fly” during class. There are a wide variety of types of questions that can used with i>clickers.

Some of the reasons for using and benefits of i>clickers include:

  • Increase or manage interaction

  • Assess student participation

  • Find more out about students

  • For formative assessment

  • For quizzes or tests

  • To do practice problems

  • To guide thinking

  • To make lectures more fun.

Steps for integrating and using i>clickers into your classroom

Steps to take if you do not have iClicker installed

Video of i>clicker Integration with D2L

Begin by reviewing the following steps. Details for each step are included within the Updated Instructor Guide - i>clicker Integration with Brightspace by D2L v2.5. Once you are familiar with the process, begin with step number 1.

  1. Determine if i>clicker system is already integrated into your classroom

    1. If yes, move to step 2.

    2. If no, contact i>clicker at mailto:contact@iclicker.com and initiate process to have i>clicker system set up in desired classroom

Note: At the present time, MSU has not centralized the purchasing of clickers. Faculty who desire to use clickers should contact the vendor (iClicker) to order the clicker for their course. The choice to use clickers is just like any other textbook and ancillary material choice that faculty make and they need to communicate the information to the bookstore and vendor. The iclicker bases that are provided in the classrooms are only receivers and do not have software preloaded, the instructor should have it downloaded onto a USB key.

If faculty have any questions about the use of clickers, (e.g., How do I upload the class grades for clickers into D2L?), contact the DLS Help Line at 517-432-6200, or toll free (844)678-6200.

  1. Purchase Instructor kit from i>clicker

  2. Download the appropriate “Integrate Wizard Files”

    1. iclicker Mac v7.14 (Mac users)

    2. iclicker Win v7.14 (PC users)

  3. Unzip the downloaded files.

  4. Follow the steps in the “Updated Instructor Guide - i>clicker Integration with Brightspace by D2L v2.5

  5. Utilize i>clickers in class (refer to “i>clickers in the Classroom” and resources below)

Steps to take if you already have iClicker installed (update your existing iClicker software)

For those with iClicker installed already, the update process is simple.

In the Help Menu click on 'Check for Update' if an update is available it will then prompt you that an update is available.

i>clicker PC & Mac Integration

Instructors often jump between operating systems when using i>clicker software. These instructions are provided to help the data transfer to play nicely between both Macs and PCs. Note the version of i>clicker you are using and follow the listed instructions accordingly:

i>clicker 10 Software: Mac OSX and Windows PCs

How to transfer data from Mac OSX to Windows:

  1. Start by putting a copy of the i>clicker software for both PC and Mac on your desktop.

  2. Rename the iClicker Win folder to iclicker WinMac

  3. Using a Mac, copy the i>clicker, i>grader, and WebUpdate application files from the i>clicker Mac folder to the iclicker WinMac folder you just created

  4. If you’re using i>clicker Integrate (i.e., students register directly within the LMS) also copy the CMS Integrate Wizard (.app) file from the Resources folder in i>clicker Mac to the Resources folder within iclicker WinMac.

Once you drag CMS Integrate Wizard.app over, your iclicker WinMac > Resources folder should contain exactly 8 items: CMS Integrate Wizard Libs, CMS Integrate Wizard.app, CMS Integrate Wizard.exe, CMS_Wizard.xml, Config.xml, Help_Master.xml, Seed_Demographics.xml, Web_Voting_Config.xml.

  • Going forward, always use the WinMac folder.
Download the appropriate "Integrate Wizard File"
    iclicker WinMac v7.14

  • Both applications will access the same data from your Classes folder.

i>clicker 7 Software: Mac OSX and Windows PCs

How to transfer data from Mac OSX to Windows:

  1. Start by putting a copy of the i>clicker software for both PC and Mac on your desktop.

  2. Rename the iclicker Win folder to iclicker WinMac

  3. Using a Mac, copy the i>clicker application from the i>clicker Mac folder to the iclicker WinMac folder you just created

  4. If you’re using i>clicker Integrate (i.e., students register directly within the LMS), you also need to copy config.xml and LMS_Wizard.xml

Note: If you do not have LMS_Wizard.xml, Integrate is not in place.

  • Going forward, always use the WinMac folder.
Download the appropriate "Integrate Wizard File"
    iclicker WinMac v7.14

  • Both applications will access the same data from your Classes folder.
